Healthy Eating Active Living

Healthy Eating, Active Living (HEAL) aims to improve access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity, prioritizing its work in New Hampshire communities and populations with the greatest health disparities. The Childrens Fund partners with HEAL to help kids in under-resourced areas to get outside, get active and build self-esteem through sports and outdoor activities. For example, in our work with the Mascoma School district in Canaan, NH, we currently fund a middle school cross-country running program, including coaching, free shoes and partial funding for the local recreation coordinator. This program benefits 20-30 fifth through eighth graders, two seasons per year.

In an effort to create opportunities for a larger spectrum of kids, we are also piloting new projects to educate middle school and high school students about the benefits of exercise. A Mascoma High School wellness class is using 20 heart rate monitors (donated by the Children’s Fund) for a full semester to track their personal heart rate data. We are hopeful that their success will inspire additional wellness projects throughout the school district.
